Johnny has been very shy around the other children and only likes to play in certain learning centers in the classroom. Johnny does not talk to the other children or participate in any activities in large groups. Mrs. Jones noticed that Johnny enjoys the dramatic play area with the dolls, dress up kit and the kitchen toys. He likes to put on an apron each day, wrap a doll up in a blanket, and cook. He does this each day when he plays in the dramatic play area. When Johnny goes on the playground, he will not ride a bike or slide, he only plays basketball. Mrs. Jones asked him does he play basketball at home and he explained that he plays basketball with his father when he goes to his house. One day Johnnyâ??s father visited and he saw Johnny playing in the dramatic play area with the apron on and wrapping the doll in a blanket. Johnnyâ??s father was extremely angry and yelled at Johnny and Mrs. Jones in the classroom. Mrs. Jones was not offended because this is not the first father to get upset because of their son playing in the dramatic play area with dolls instead of in the block area with dump trucks. But Mrs. Jones knew this was the only area in which Johnny was comfortable and would actually speak to another child in the classroom. So she explained all of this to Johnnyâ??s father.Relevant Social Psychological Theory: Children are vessels when it comes to learning gender roles. A child will watch his or her parents and figure it out from there. If the father is present and active in a household the son(s) will more than likely follow the role that he portrays. On the other hand if there is no father in the household, the son will most likely follow the role of their mother. Some cultures are stricter on gender roles in society than others. Many cultures believe that a man is to be the head of the household, strong, breadwinner, and protector while the woman takes care of the children, cook, and clean up. There are research finding emulating the fact that appropriate gender roles are rewarding while inappropriate gender roles are punished (Bandura, Ross, & Ross, 1961). Many social behaviors are thought to be taught through same-sex models. Male children are expected to be more like the adult males in their lives and social settings. Male children are often expected to show some type of aggression and strength rather than cooking and taking care of household duties.Plan: Since Mrs. Jones already knows why Johnnyâ??s father is upset, she did not take offense to his outburst about his son. There are several ways Mrs. Jones can handle the situation. The best option would be a sit down with Johnnyâ??s father to allow him to express his concern about Johnny playing in the dramatic play area and to also share information with him. Mrs. Jones should hear the father out and then assure him that Johnny is a very shy child within the classroom. She should explain that this is how Johnny plays with the other children and that is only mimicking what he sees at home. Since Johnny lives with his mother and baby sister, he sees his mother put on an apron, cook, clean, and take care of the baby. He is doing what is being modeled in front of him every day by his mother. Mrs. Jones can also express to Johnnyâ??s father that this is a positive social behavior that will expand and produce more positive behaviors as he grows. Since Johnny is not exposed to the male gender role in society in his home because his father does not live there, but as he gets older and spends more time around other males, he will sure adapt more male gender roles within his social setting. Mrs. Jones can assure Johnnyâ??s father that his is showing the gender role he is witnessing at home from the adult in his life, his mother (Bandura, Ross, & Ross, 1961). Mrs. Jones can also explain to Johnnyâ??s father that he also exhibits some behaviors from him as well such as wanting to play basketball when they are outside. This will help Johnnyâ??s father understand that Johnny is still very impressionable. He spits out only what he sees and experiences. Hopefully the conversation will ease his fatherâ??s mind and worries.Jill Davies:Bullying is an antisocial behavior that can leave lasting scars on the bullied victim. Bullying can take many forms from name calling to physical aggression. The victim is targeted with the intention of ridiculing or other forms of harm resulting in the bully feeling superior. The bully seeks to dominate and show that they have power over their victim(Wang,2018).The victim is left fearful of further acts and filled with shame or sadness as a result. Bullying can take place during school hours or after school, both on and off school campuses. The majority of bullying takes place where there are few educators as witnesses. The bully may or may not be afraid of repercussions for his or her actions. Often times the bully can validate their behavior and feel little to no remorse for their actions. Children can exhibit the signs of bullying, however many parents and educators are not always watchful of the signs. If a child appears at school or their home with unexplained bruises, there is a chance that physical bullying may have occurred. Children who are being bullied in school will make excuses why they cannot attend school or fake being sick in order to avoid attending school that day(Bazelon,2013). Children may also have nightmares and or trouble sleeping from the trauma of the event. In many cases, the child will not outwardly express their fear or describe the event to their parents in fear of it reoccurring or punishment. The child will experience a feeling of helplessness, and social anxiety until the situation is corrected by an adult or educator. In this fictitious example, we learn that Carl, a second grader at Williams Elementary is being ridiculed by Tony, a classmate. Tony has teased Carl about being overweight and has taken Carl’s lunch money leaving Carl in tears. While many other children have gathered to watch the event take place, the teachers present on the playground have been focused on the other areas of the playground. The bullying takes place without further intervention. In a proper response, the teachers would be spread out evenly throughout the playground and observing the children in their section. The teacher could have witnessed the event and questioned the children that were present. The teacher could bring Tony and Carl into the office and have the principal speak to both children. Carl may be reluctant to express what has happened as noted above, but his physical demeanor may give clues to the adult. For example, if Carl is tearful and emotional, it is likely that he was the victim. Tony could also have a history of bullying which may need to be addressed with his parents. If the teacher on the playground was able to intercept the event all together, the bullying may have been prevented. It is recommended that bullying is reported within 24 hours in order to retrieve an item that may have been stolen. In this case money could have been returned to Carl, and Tony could have faced adequate punishment.
