CHAPTER 3
3.1 Introduction
Generally, an Electronic Performance Management Systems (E-PMS) is a form of a webbased tool installed by companies in order to make easy the process of performance reviews.
This tool guarantees an effective performance management as well as appraisals thus making
companies and organizations to achieve their set targets and goals. E-PMS works hand in hand
with the companyâ??s performance management systems in attaining improvement for the overall
performance of the company (Ghiani, Musmanno and Laporte, 2013). Additionally, E-PMS
helps in monitoring both the workerâ??s knowledge and intellectual capital as the key factors for
the success of companies. Companies which have employed the knowledge of E-PMS have
recorded huge profits within the first two years after installation. A good example is the AL
HASSAN COMPANY. E-PMS has enabled AL HASSAN COMPANY to achieve great success
through effective support of employeeâ??s goals and objectives.
3.2 Research Design
In order to determine the effectiveness of the E-PMS, AL HASSAN COMPANY
research design focused on the following areas: knowledge of work, communication, teamwork,
employee accomplishments and strengths. The company applied the E-PMS to determine the
knowledge of work. Determination of the knowledge of work involved analyzing the levels of
skills and knowledge among the companyâ??s employees. Additionally, the research focused on
determining whether the employees understood all areas in the job as well as identifying
different areas that needed improvement.
3
Secondly, the research design focused on the communication among employees. AL
HASSAN COMPANY used the E-PMS tool to determine whether the communication among
employees improved after installing the tool in their company. Generally, the E-PMS tool was
expected to improve on the ways through which firmâ??s employeeâ??s express ideas to each other as
well as to the companyâ??s management. Thirdly, the E-PMS tool was used to determine any
improvement in the companyâ??s teamwork. This involved measuring the interactions and interrelationships among workers.
Lastly, the tool was used to determine the employeeâ??s
accomplishments and Strengths through facilitating responsiveness after completion of tasks.
The tool suggests that, the relative worker strengths and weaknesses must be recognized and
rewarded through analyzing individualâ??s rates of performance. The E-PMS tool was used to
analyze whether organizational employees were complying with the set rules, policies and
guidelines (Ghiani, Musmanno and Laporte, 2013).
3.3 Population of the Study
In order to determine the effectiveness of E-PMS tool, the E-PMS, AL HASSAN
COMPANY should have selected a random sample among its employees. Primary data will be
used in this project to gather all the necessary informationâ??s for the analysis. The research
technique that will be adopted for this project is qualitative research method. Since, itâ??s widely
used for gathering thoughts and opinions on a matter. Interviews will be scheduled with the
companyâ??s employees and questionnaires will be distributed as well. A random sample of the
employees will be used in carrying out the study. In order to improve on the accuracy, the
selected population must be 50% of its total employees. For example, if the total population is
200 employees, weâ??ll select at least 100 employees as the sample population. The selected
4
population will be issued with questionnaires with questions related to the E-PMS tool.
Additionally, 50% of the selected employees will be subjected to interviews whereby they will
be expected to provide answers related to some of the benefits which they feel will be achieved
from the installation of the E-PMS tool in the company.
3.4 Sampling techniques and Sample Size
Before analyzing the data collected, the following are some of the sampling techniques
which are recommended as far as effectiveness of the E-PMS tool to the company is concerned:
Nonprobability sampling, systematic sampling, simple random sampling, cluster sampling,
stratified sampling, probability-proportional-to-size sampling, quota sampling or minimax
sampling. In this case, data sampling will involve the selection of a subset within the individuals
making the population of study in estimating the characteristics of the entire population. The data
sampling approach is preferred since its cost-efficient data collection is fast as compared to the
entire population.
For the case of AL HASSAN COMPANY, data sampling will involve categorizing and
selecting the subset based on the work experience. Employees who have been working for the
company for more than 15 years will be interviewed differently and their opinions will be
analyzed independently. Secondly, employees with work experience of less than 15 years will be
interviewed independently and their results analyzed. Through sampling the sample population,
it will be easy to collect opinions and ideas from the companyâ??s employees as far as E-PMS tool
is concerned (Oliver, 2000).
5
3.5 Research Instruments and Validity and Reliability Testing
As presented above, the main research tools will be questionnaires, interviews,
observation as well as use of suggestion boxes. The company will design questionnaires
comprising of straight forward questions which will be answered throughout the study in order to
gather information about the benefits associated with the E-PMS tool to the company.
Additionally, interviews will be conducted for all employees in the company. Suggestion boxes
will be distributed in all areas of the company to facilitate in collecting enough information about
employeeâ??s views concerning the E-PMS tool (Oliver, 2000). Lastly, observations on the
employeeâ??s reactions will be made by the upper management to determine any improvement in
the employee behavior.
3.6 Data Collection Techniques
Questionnaires and interviews are the main methods which will be used in collection of data.
Data obtained from the two methods will be analyzed independently and compared.

3.7 Data Analysis Techniques
For accuracy purposes, in AL HASSAN Company, at first, all the findings may be
gathered by using excel sheets and weâ??ll distribute the questionnaire electronically, by using
monkey survey or google forms. Additionally, we can use a variety of analyzing techniques
which includes the following: SPSS, standard deviation, sample size determination, hypothesis
testing, and regression. A higher sample mean would indicate that, most of the companyâ??s
employees are supporting the idea of introducing E-PMS tool. Additionally, a higher value of the
R^2 in the regression analysis would mean that a higher percentage of employees are supporting
introduction of an E-PMS tool (Al Fazari et al 2016).
3.8 Legal, Ethical, Social Issues
AL HASSAN COMPANY will encounter a number of legal issues while carrying out the
research. Firstly, there are government policies which restrict employees from sharing all their
views. In such a case, the company will be unable to gather enough and efficient data for the
analysis. Among the ethical issues to be encountered are the informed consent whereby the
employees decide to give their opinions whether itâ??s right or wrong. Furthermore, privacy as part
of the ethical issues are encountered while doing the research. Employee privacy such as age is
interfered with during the research. Lastly, social issues will be encountered in case the
9
employees fail to cooperate during the research. Some employees may sound rude and
disrespectful during the data collection (Czarnecki, 1999).
