answer the follow up questions (in bold) about the attached essaySince in this story you write mainly about Foundation (and the uses of vast space and time in SF), for your followup let me ask you about The Time Machine (and the uses of *really* vast stretches of time). One way to get at this might be to think about what authors *donâ??t* do in these novels. Asimov, for example, decided not to populate the vast spaces of the galaxy with intelligent aliens. And Wells does not use the distant future as an occasion to bring intelligent aliens to earth. A lot of modern SF, by contrast, seems to assume that aliens are â??out thereâ? somewhere, and that itâ??s only a matter of time before we find them or they find us. But Foundation and The Time Machine both leave out aliens and keep the focus on humans. In Foundation, those humans are biologically the same as we are, but in The Time Machine, humans have evolved into two species of post-humans, the Eloi and Morlock, who are neither quite human nor quite alien. Call them quasi-alien. This gets me to wondering whether The Time Machine is really any different than a typical Star Trek episode. The Time Traveller travels through time, encounters some different/alien beings, engages in a series of adventures, and barely escapes with his life before returning to the safety of his own time. Is this really any different than someone traveling through space, encountering some different/alien beings, engaging in a series of adventures, and barely escaping with their life before returning to the safety of their own planet? How much difference does it really make whether our hero travels through time or through space? The main difference I see is that the time travel novum allows the writer to comment on humanity in different ways. By using the time-travel trick, Wells is able to say, â??This is what we humans will become if we continue our rigid socioeconomic class system into the future: our different classes will evolve into different species.â? Time travel allows Wells to convey a certain message that space travel could not. Can you think of any other significant differences between time travel and space travel?

Isaac Asimovâ??s Foundation is the first book of a series of books written by the author.
The author builds a fictional empire Galactic Empire with countless planets in a vast scale of
time (Asimov, 2015). Asimovâ??s stories were inspired by reading Edward Gibbonâ??s The History
of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Foundation is not a new kind of a story, but a
familiar story put in a new setting, which is vast in terms of space and time. He simply uses
knowledge of cosmology and astronomy to write an old and familiar story.
Foundation was written during World War II and America seemed to have become the world
ruler. Asimov said that war cannot solve a problem so in his stories he was basically trying to
prove that technology and science can be used to solve any problem. In his book he invents
psychohistory, which was a science that predicted the future; it predicted the fall of the
empire many years to come (Asimov, 2015). He uses psychohistory as a fictitious science that
can predict and solve worldly problems like war.
The story simply explains the fall of the Roman Empire. The capital of Galactic Empire is
Trantor which represents Rome when it was at the peak of power. Trantor in the story claimed
many more planets than it could manage, just like Rome, and the science predicts its fall. The
leaders of Trantor are too busy to see its fall just like Rome. After the fall of the fictitious
empire, a period of Dark Age is predicted to follow (Asimov, 2015). After the fall of Roman
Empire, a Dark Age followed in Western Europe, which was characterized by raids and fights
by neighbors. There were four provinces of the Galactic Empire but they later broke off to form
four independent kingdoms as a result of the weakening of the empire. This can be compared
to the tribes in Germany and England, which broke from Rome as it was becoming weak.
Asimovâ??s Foundation is therefore not an original story but a historical story set in a different
and vast setting.
The same technique of putting normal human activities in a vast space is seen in Star Trek. It
is based on a crew of the USS Enterprise that goes on a mission to explore outer space
(Barrett & Barrett, 2016). The story looks into God, war, politics, sex, and racism among other
thing related to real human life. The story The Time Machine narrates a time machine, which
is able to rocket into the future, but the setting of the story is on one planet (Wells, 2005). Itâ??s
a story in which the author did not incorporate the knowledge of universe into it. All in
all, these stories lack original ideas and only put a normal story into a vast setting.
