First of all, this phrase “libertarian tendencies” on the question captured my attention. I
believe that such a question can never get a clear-cut answer. This is because the concept of
libertarianism is not a black and white one. To be honest, even utilitarianism is not a black
and white concept. This is to say, they both have a gray area when it becomes difficult to
decide or to align with one instead of another. I would say that yes I usually have libertarian
tendencies in my decision making but not always. As libertarianism is all about individuals
freedom and the respect of their rights, there are some situations when it becomes really
difficult to decide whether one this should be considered an individual right or not. Now,
because I find this question a complicated one, I decided to answer it based on the three
policies that all libertarians reject. I am going to explain why I am a sort of libertarian but not
a 100 % one.
In the book, the three types of policies libertarians reject are as following: no paternalism, no
morals legislation, and no redistribution of income or wealth. For no paternalism,
libertarians oppose laws to protect people from harming themselves. This is because
libertarians believe that such laws violate the right of the individual to decide what risks to
assume. They say that as long as there are no third parties to be harmed, and that as long as
individuals are responsible and able to accept the outcomes of their decisions, the
government has no right to interfere. I partially do not agree with this. We cannot let people
do whatever to their lives and just watch them still. A libertarian would refuse the law of
wearing the safety belt while driving because they see it as an individual right! However,
governments need to set this straight as a protocol for others to follow. Why would I watch
people die and get hurt because of them being careless to protect themselves. A mother won’t
let her children do as they wish when it comes to their safety. Even in the jungle when it
comes to safety, wolfs have rules for who to walk in front or in the middle or in the back
when moving in groups. We also need order.
For no moral legislation, they oppose using the coercive force of law to promote notions of
virtue or to express the moral convictions of the majority. They say that even if the majority
of the community disapproval or dislike what the minority are doing, the minority should
not be shunned or banned from living their lives as they wish. This is something I agree on.
However, and again, there are some situations when it becomes difficult to decide. After all,
moral regulations have helped us in different ways to reach this level of advancement in
many fields of our lives.
For the no redistribution of income or wealth, they refuse any law that requires some people
to help others like imposing taxation for redistribution of wealth. They say that to help the
needy is something that should be left up to the individual to undertake, not mandated by
the government. They view redistributive taxes as a form of coercion and theft. I agree with
them on this point. However, I have to admit that the world would be a much better place to
live if the wealthy help the needy.
Now, as you can see, I have libertarian tendencies when it comes to decision making but I
have to admit that, it is not always easy for me to decide whether it is the right or the wrong
thing I am doing by making a decision based on libertarianism.
Although Kant’s school of thought seems logical to understand at the beginning, it gets very
uneasy to process while reading. I would like to explain the difference between
Deontologists and Consequentialists because it is fundamental to understand what Kant
stands for. As we read, Deontologists and Consequentialists are different. Consequentialists
start by considering what things are good and identify ‘right’ actions as the ones that produce
the maximum of those good things. On the other hand, Deontologists start by considering
what actions are ‘right’ and proceed from there. So, we can see that Kant does not care about
the results as long as the actions are moral and respectful. For me, I agree with the universal
moral rules and I believe they come naturally to us before we make any decision. When
coming to make a decision ,of course, I want to to focus on giving equal respect to all human
beings. I also want to keep in mind that some things should never be done, no matter what
good consequences they produce. I also know that I should focus on the action itself instead
of what outcomes it brings. Here, I want to include this part I read in the BBC post. Please
find it below:
â??If a person didn’t intend to do a particular wrong act – it was an accident perhaps – then
from a deontological point of view we might think that they hadn’t done anything deserving
of criticism. This seems to fit with ordinary thinking about ethical issues.â? This shows how
intuitive this school of thought is. However, it is not easy to always follow it. Sometimes we
find it difficult to do the right thing because of the bad things it will bring. Thus, I found it
difficult for me to adapt to only one way when it comes to decision making. Again, this was
not an easy read. I have to reread it for the third time and focus on what its logics are. But
what I want to mention here, that we cannot stick to one way of decision making all the
time. I have to admit that it is tough to make a decision, especially if it is a big one.
