MATH 153

Summer 2018 Project 1- 2017 NFL Quarterback Week 1 Stats Analysis (Part 2)
Context: Every year NFL teams set out on the journey to achieve the ultimate goal in U.S. sports; winning
the Super Bowl. Much of each teamâ??s success depends on the quality and performance of the
quarterback; the only player to touch and decide what to do with the football on each offensive play.
The attached spreadsheet provides a first week snapshot of 31 quarterbacks who began the 2017 NFL
season. The variables included are the ranking, quarterback name, team, number of completions,
number of attempts, completion percentage, total yards, and quarterback rating.
As an example to explain these values, after week 1 the 12h ranked quarterback was Ben Roesthlisberger
of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In his first game 24 of his 36 attempted passes were caught by a member of
his team. This translates to a 66.7% completion percentage. Those completions, along with the playerâ??s
yards gained after the catch, earned the team 263 total yards. These statistics, in addition to others that
arenâ??t recorded here, are used to calculate his rating as a 95.
Use these data to complete the following steps to constitute the first project for this semester.
1. Looking at the total yards gained in week 1, these data can be separated into high, medium, or
low performances. What type of summary is the table below considered? Describe the
characteristics that support your answer.
Performance

2. Explain whether â??Performanceâ? is a qualitative or quantitative variable.
3. Use the table given above to sketch a bar chart. Provide the chart.
4. Would the quarterback rating be considered a discrete or continuous quantitative variable?
Explain.
5. Although the total yards are recorded in whole number form, making them discrete, explain
why yards is actually a continuous variable.
6. Use the number of attempts to create a relative frequency distribution. (Round the relative
frequency values to three decimal places.)

7. Below is a stem-and-leaf plot for the number of completions from week 1. This rudimentary
display has a few important features: 1) it is often used to provide a quick look at the shape, the
center, and the spread of a distribution of the data, 2) the original variable values recorded are
preserved, and 3) if the original data list is re-created from this display as they are provided, an
ordered list of the values will be shown, something useful in other particular statistical measures
and displays. Review these features in your textbook, then, based on feature 1) and 3), describe
the distribution, and explain how the values of 12 and 26 are represented, respectively, in the
stem-and-leaf plot.

8. Use the full list of completions to create a frequency histogram. You should do this using 6
classes, with a class width of 4, and the lower class limit for the first class being 7. Whether you
do this by hand or using Statcrunch, be sure you use and display the correct information on the
horizontal axis in your histogram. Provide the histogram.
9. Provide the 5-number summary for the list of quarterback ratings. In addition, calculate the
lower and upper fences that would be used to identify any outliers.
10. Using the 5-number summary you just found, create a boxplot for the quarterback ratings. Be
sure to draw the boxplot to scale and identify the distribution seen.
What you need to turn in:
A.
B.
C.
D.
A cover sheet containing your name and identification as Project 1 for Summer 2018.
Typed responses to each of the tasks above (in order).
Print-outs or hand-drawn displays that are requested, inserted in appropriate order.
