or why not.

the policy of Imperialism. Explain these approaches.

the practice of imperialism overseas.

your claims.
Student 1:
One area that was in need of reform in American Society during the time period of 1890 and
1920 would be unsafe working conditions. The story in our textbook of the fire that Rose
Rosenfeld (immigrant from Austria) was in touched my soul. Itâ??s terribly unfortunate that 146
people losing their lives in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, due to the building being locked
and overcrowded stairwells (Barnes & Bowles, 2015). This tragic event opened the eyes of the
unaware, the Progressives then sought out for a change for unsafe working
conditions/environments (Barnes & Bowles, 2015). In theory â??Social Darwinists, who believed
some people and races were naturally inferior, Progressives argued that education and science
could help individuals improve themselves and their society (Barnes & Bowles, 2015, Sec. 5.1).
When the fact of the matter is; no one person/race is more superior than another. Thanks to
Reformer Jacob Riis for exposing such unsafe working conditions through the art of
photography. Possible catching the attention of other Progressives who were committed to
improving the lives of those who found themselves in situation where they were unable to work,
forcing one into homelessness (Barnes & Bowles, 2015). The Rockefeller Foundation â??which
donated millions of dollars to urban activists who improved health conditions in cities; churches
that espoused the Social Gospel and engaged in charity work directed toward those in need; and
politicians, who used the tools of government(Barnes & Bowles, 2015, Sec 5.1). The United
States approach to imperialism and foreign policy was through diplomacy and industrialism.
Thus, the United States. was able to open trade networks in the Western Hemisphere and
eventually making itself a global economic and political power. According to Barnes & Bowles
(2015) â??American imperialism resulted in the annexation of several territories throughout the
Pacific. Control over these territories helped bolster American influence in the region (Section
4.2). This approach of the reform in the United States was consistent to the practice of
imperialism overseas. Thus, pushing the ideals to the citizens of the United States and to the
foreigners overseas, concluded an improvement for society. Iâ??d like to think President Roosevelt
played a big part in reviving Societies.
Student 2:
During the time frame of 1890 and 1920 many things were being worked on throughout the
American homestead. Many countries were trying to expand and win over as many territories as
they could, in hopes to protect their main country better. Many Americans thought that the
spread of imperialism was not aligning with the values of the nation. With the spread of
imperialism came the spread of missionaries, and many missionaries thought that their way of
life was far superior than that of the native people and they often ridiculed the natives and told
them to stop how they were living (Barnes and Bowles, 2015). The way progressives handled the
spread of imperialism was much different at home verses the way the treated people in other
countries. At home progressives were more encouraging.
Problems throughout America were high in this time frame because so much change was
happening in such a little time. “Economic growth and industrial production created dual
demands for raw materials and new markets for manufactured goods and agricultural products”
(Barnes and Bowles, 2015). The need for a growing agricultural industry made factories work
around the clock, making less time for the workers. Workers in this industry faced many
problems and not enough solutions. Upton Sinclairs novel The Jungle (1906) brought nationwide
attention to the unsanitary conditions in Chicago’s meat packing industry. President Roosevelt
moved quickly after the books release and in 1906 congress passed the meat inspection act and
the pure food and drug act. These actions helped ensure that meat packaging plants were using
clean meat and that the workers were getting the help they needed when they needed it. I think
that the progressives did the best job they could and that even today this industry struggles
because it’s hard to prove much of what is going on in these types of plants.

information that you learned change your understanding of those events? Make every attempt to
utilize the reading material to support your claims. Utilize the reading material to support your
claims.
Student 1:
What struck you in particular as you explored the course material this week?
What struck me in particular about the first week, was the depth of information about
immigrants. I initially started my discussion being about the Native Americans, but after further
reading, I found the struggles and challenges immigrants faced in the 19th century to present day
very intriguing. Immigration in the 19th century acted as a catalyst for present day immigrants.
Through everything they overcame and struggled with in nothing less of perseverance and
dedication.
What insights have you had?
The insight I acquired after week one is being able to be open minded about everything. History
is not just a subject of our past, but the foundation we stand on today. I never knew the struggles
Chinese immigrants faced coming to America. With the Chinese Exclusion Act and being cast
away by the very group who was supposed to stand by and protect them (Knights of Labor). I
yearn to gain even more knowledge going forward.
What have you been struggling with?
I have noticed I struggle with being able write everything I learned into my paper. I sometimes
have to re-read the material a few times. After the first discussion I found that just slowing down
and concentrating on what I accomplish seems to help me out. My only question to my fellow
classmates is, how are you preparing for your final assignment? I am writing about
â??Immigrants.â? I have a lot of material, but now I am trying to decipher what I need to write
about. Any helpful tips?
