Rhetorical Précis: â??Echo Chambers- Social Media Leads to Closed Mindsâ?
A new world has been created with social media. As Robin Smith, chairwoman of the Tennessee
Republican Party, Author of, â??Echo Chambers- Social Media Leads to Closed Minds,â? argues that social media
had led people to never think about winning the hearts and minds of others, however it is all about to win
arguments and beat others, guaranteeing limited exposure to opposing opinion. It had been supported when
Smith introduced the real meaning of echo chambers, â??Most likely, the majority of your “friends” say what you
say, like what you like, and argue your same points (8). Social media had supported people to be divided. As it
was discussed, â??online encounters via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram, among other online
communities, allow you to choose “friends” you “like,” who agree with certain opinions, or run in the same
groupsâ? (Smith 1). Robinâ??s purpose in writing this article to prevent division in our society, and to prevent echo
chambers in our society.
How sound is this source and why? I believe that this source was very convincing because we
deal with social media every day, it had become true that social media is creating a division in
our society. Each user is only getting more followers from their same-minded and opinions. Echo
chamber has been easily created.
What do you find strong or especially agree with based on your current understanding and why?
The examples that were given were actually really strong, because it was based on real-life

events. Specially the use of Google, and just by one search we will suddenly see online
advertisements for that item or similar items showing up on websites
What do you find weak, fallacious, or especially disagree with based on your current
understanding and why? The only part I kind of not agree with is when the author said that she
had stood as the only Republican in a room of almost 1,000 folks. I felt this example was not
really helpful.
Has your thinking about your chosen topic changed as a result of this source and why/why not?
My thought about social media has expanded more and more every time I read a new source.
Social media is making people live a life of fighting and winning arguments, more than living a
life of winning hearts and minds.

Rhetorical Précis: â??Social Media Has Good and Bad Effects on Kids: Experts; Sites like
Facebook build communities, but bullying, ‘sexting’ can occur too, pediatrics group saysâ?
Social media has many bad effects in our society. As a Health day reporter, Serena
Gordon, asserts how social media is inescapable facets of modern life. There are many potential
risk of social media that is affecting our children. This was supported when one of the potential
risk was introduced, â??Younger children may try to lie about their age to get on to sites, like
Facebook, that have strict age limits (Gordon 8). Social media is making it so easy for kids to
lie and learn that it is okay to lie. For instance, when we want to sign up for Facebook, we could
easily pick fake names, fake picture, fake age, and many untrusted information, if we allow our
kids to do that, then we are basically teaching them that it is okay to lie. Another potential risk
that was given is, â??When preteens and teens spend too much time on social media sites, they may
begin to show classic signs of depression, such as changing sleep and eating habits, experiencing
mood swings, hanging out with different friends or becoming socially isolated (Gordon 15).
Social could easily change lives. The authorâ??s purpose in writing this essay that social media
could have both and good effects on our society, however the bad are covering all the good
effects. Social media could be very risky for our young children, it is also creating a world or lies
and depression in our society. For this source the intended audience are the adults, and parents of
many children. To stop the risks from growing parents needs to help in that.
How sound is this source and why? I believe this was very sound because it shows the risks of
social media on our children. Many risk may not be visible for parents to acknowledge.
However, this source has shown many reasons why social media is bad for children.

What do you find strong or especially agree with based on your current understanding and why?
What I found really strong is how social media is able to make children believe that lies are
okay, and accepted in our society, or the social media society. Since Iâ??m a social media user as
well, I stopped believing or trusting anything I see in social media. I also agree that social media
is disrupting childrenâ??s eating and sleeping time. Their social media world is leading them far
away from our society.
What do you find weak, fallacious, or especially disagree with based on your current
understanding and why? What Iâ??ve found weak is when it says that social media help people
connect with each other, however this is not wrong, but since we are focusing on children here in
this source I donâ??t see how children will be able to connect with each other in social media. To
connect with social media, we have to know or at least just a little on how to connect together in
real life first.
Has your thinking about your chosen topic changed as a result of this source and why/why not?
My thoughts have changed to more information about this topic, because we are able to compare
on childhood to todayâ??s childrenâ??s childhood. When we look back, we could easily remember
how awesome and fun our childhood was, we had played and met many friends, and neighbors
that we still contact with today. However, it is very sad to know that the new generation is far
away from living the fun of real life. The are busy creating a unknown and untrusted world of
many anonyms users.

Rhetorical Précis: â??Social Media Bots: How they spread misinformation
With the growth of social media, it is getting harder and harder every day to trust anything off the
internet. As Joanna M. Burkhardt, the author of, â??Social Media Bots: How they spread misinformation,â?
establishes how bots which are automatic software programs that perform repetitive tasks to gather data from the
internet, are playing a role as human beings in our society. It is coming to a point where people are
communicating with bots as if it was human beings. This information was supported by Burkhardt when she
shares, â??People who are unaware that they are interacting with a bot can easily be supplied with false
information (1). Since people are using the internet and they are only seeing computer or phone screens than it
is very hard for them to distinguish a real human from a bot. The authorâ??s purpose in writing this article is to
open peopleâ??s eyes and educate them on how to use internet properly. There were six ways on how to protect
ourselves from bots that spread misinformation. The intended audience the author wanted to reach to were all
the people that accepts friends request without knowing the account in person. For all the social media users that
do not pay attention to who they are communicating with, and for the people that miss the little details that could
easily show if it was bots or a real human being.
How sound is this source and why? I believe this source was very sound because it shows how
social media could easily share misinformation and human beings wonâ??t be able to distinguish
that.
What do you find strong or especially agree with based on your current understanding and why?
The bot software that was introduced in the source I agree with, because now a day people are
6
Gorgees 7
accepting any friend request or a follow from anyone, because their goal is just to reach much
followers, however, they are missing the bold point, that they donâ??t know who they are
accepting, they donâ??t take the time to search about the account before accepting it. Many people
are doing that, and this is how our social media mass is creating over the years.
What do you find weak, fallacious, or especially disagree with based on your current
understanding and why? Nothing was weak in this source, all the information that was given was
totally helpful. However, they are many more ways to prevent misinformation, than the six ways
they provided us with.
Has your thinking about your chosen topic changed as a result of this source and why/why not?
My thought about my topic has expanded even more, because I never knew what bots were. Yes,
I did know that people will be able to create fake accounts and everything, but I never knew that
there is a software that could act as human beings without a notice.
