Low Economic Status linked to high HIV Infection
Research conducted by Arentoft and others on the link between HIV infection and socioeconomic status, explores the relationship in diverse samples of 134 HIV positive adult people.
The study utilizes a standard SES measure. The researcher establishes that people in the lower
socio-economic class have higher vulnerability to HIV infection (Arentoft et al, 2015). The
research states that many low income earners have higher chances of becoming desperate, hence
engaging in immoral acts, such as abuse of drugs and prostitution. Therefore, the greater
percentage of people who take part in unprotected sex are from societies that are socioeconomically challenged. Additionally, parents who are financially handicapped mostly encourage
their girls to engage in prostitution (Arentoft et al, 2015). This is aimed to assist the girl child cope
with their costs, and add some income to the financially challenged parents. Essentially, the article
substantially answers the research question; through provision of different dimensions of the
influence of SES on HIV/AIDS infection rate. The conclusion of the article is that socio-economic
status plays a huge role in the spread of HIV.
A research by Degroote and others points out the link between SES, and explores what
intensifies the rate of HIV infection among people living in poverty stricken communities.
According to the authors, the humanâ??s ability to make decisions determines the spread of HIV
virus in different societies. Notably, low socio-economic status deprives one the capability of
making the right decisions, concerning risky behaviors (Degroote et al, 2013). Therefore, people
from poor families tend to do anything in order to fend for themselves!
The authors, Degroote and others, link poor SES to stress and depression, which in turn
effects a negative behavioral change. Depression and other related illnesses causes people to seek
medical attention in hospitals. Medical professionals have the ability to influence depressed poor
peopleâ??s actions either in a positive or negative way (Degroote et al, 2013). This regards
medications and the treatment offered to these depressed people by clinical officers. Lower social
class people tend to search for material and emotional help from a variety of people, inclusive of
clinical officers. However, some practitioners do not actually have the time to assist their patients,
and may give a cold shoulder to these vulnerable people. This lowers the self-esteem of such
people, and leads them to making dangerous decisions. Eventually, they engage in uncontrolled
sexual behaviors; hence the risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS. To sum it up, the authors conclude that
socio-economic status highly influences the rate of spread of HIV/AIDS in the society.
The Vulnerability of HIV in Children from Poor Families
Cohen and others strongly associate socio-economic status to the spread of the HIV virus
in the society. The authors have conducted research on the impacts of SES to the cognitive
performances of children who possess the HIV virus. The article establishes that the spread of HIV
among children is linked to various cognitive concerns (Cohen et al, 2014). The occurrence of
serious neurological complications, such as HIV-encephalopathy has reduced significantly.
However, SESs are a critical cause of cognitive mismatches in HIV infected people. The research
finds out that, kids from poor income families and infected with HIV, have mental disturbances
because their basic needs in life are rarely fulfilled (Cohen et al, 2014). Basically, the study
establishes that these kids are not able to have a relationship with other kids from high income
families. As a result, the childrenâ??s intelligence quotient is greatly lowered, and their socializing
capability hindered. This forces them to be dormant in life, and exhibit inactivity in socioeconomic activities. In conclusion, the authors state that kids from socio-economically advanced
families have the ability to manage the virus, as compared to kids from poor backgrounds. This
intensifies the spread of HIV/AIDS among people in the lower socio-economic status.
The authors go ahead to advocate for control measures to eradicate poverty in the society,
such as provision of employment opportunities to all members of the society. While most people
are able to acquire a living and fend for their families, these kids and other society members would
acquire growth with social concerns and being able to interact with other people with self-respect
(Cohen et al, 2014). Therefore, children and their parents develop high self-esteem and respect;
this prevents reckless behaviors which can lead to HIV infection among societies.
